Embark on the ultimate campervan journey to Scotland’s Outer Hebrides, exploring the stunning landscapes of Harris and Lewis. This 12-day itinerary, starting and ending in Edinburgh, is packed with scenic drives, wild camping spots, must-visit attractions, and local food stops.

Day 1-2: Edinburgh to Skye

Your adventure begins with a drive northwest from Edinburgh, passing through Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. Along the way, stop in Glencoe to take in its breathtaking views before reaching the Isle of Skye. On the road, enjoy hearty Scottish fare at The Clachaig Inn in Glencoe or fresh seafood from The Oyster Shed on Skye. Lochcarron Viewpoint, near the Skye Bridge, makes for a tranquil wild camping spot overlooking the water. Be sure to visit iconic landmarks like Eilean Donan Castle, the Fairy Pools, and Neist Point Lighthouse.

Day 3-4: Ferry to Harris

Take the ferry from Uig on Skye to Tarbert on Harris and enjoy a scenic drive through rugged hills and pristine beaches. One of the best places to wild camp is near Luskentyre Beach, where stunning sunsets are guaranteed. For meals, stop at Croft 36 for local seafood and baked goods or The Temple Café in North Harris for light bites with a view. Don’t miss exploring Luskentyre and Seilebost Beaches, famous for their white sands and turquoise waters, and make time for a tour and tasting at the Harris Distillery.

Day 5-7: Explore Harris & Lewis

As you drive north from Harris, you’ll reach the Isle of Lewis, known for its history and dramatic coastlines. Wild camping options include Hushinish Beach in Harris, a secluded spot perfect for peaceful nights, and don't forget to visit Cliff Beach and Kneep Beach on Lewis. For food, grab some coffee and soup at Comunn Eachdraidh Nis, the Museum cafe on Lewis. The Boatshed Restaurant provides a fine dining experience. Key attractions include the ancient Callanish Standing Stones, the restored Gearrannan Blackhouse Village, and the striking Butt of Lewis Lighthouse at the island’s northernmost point. Bring your goggles and wetsuits and enjoy some snorkling at Carnish Beach with the seals.

Day 8: Return Ferry to Skye

Take the ferry from Stornoway back to Ullapool, then drive towards Skye. Consider wild camping near the Kylesku Bridge, where incredible views of the surrounding lochs await. For a meal, stop by The Seafood Shack in Ullapool for fresh, local seafood or the Plockton Inn in Plockton for traditional Scottish dishes.

Day 9-10: Skye to Glencoe

Retrace your route through Skye and Glencoe, taking time to explore areas you might have missed. Spend the night at the Three Sisters Viewpoint in Glencoe, a dramatic location nestled among towering peaks. Enjoy pub classics at The Bothy Bar in Fort William or bring a packed meal to savor the scenery at Glen Etive.

Day 11-12: Return to Edinburgh

On the final leg of your journey, drive back to Edinburgh via Stirling. Do some charity shopping in Callander and buy some fresh pastries from Mhor Bread & Store. Consider camping near Blair Drummond for a quiet night. Stop at historic sites such as Stirling Castle and The Kelpies to make the most of your return trip back to Edinburgh.

Campervan Travel Tips

While wild camping, always follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code to respect the environment and local communities. Book your ferry tickets in advance, especially during peak travel seasons, and pack essentials like warm clothing, plenty of food (shops are far and wide between in Harris & Lewis), and one pound coins for the showers and facilities which are dotted around the island. We found Harris & Lewis one of the easiest and cleanest places to wild camp in Scotland.
